Joseph Tanner, M.Arch, shp

I am a Design Professional currently living in Eugene, Oregon where my two dogs Hansel and Jaegermeister are helping me renovate a unique 1974 modernist house. Unfortunately they aren’t so great at carrying things so they’re mostly on inspection duty.

I graduated from Kansas State University in 2013 with a Masters in Architecture, during which I had two internships, both focused on design, with one working for Arnold Imaging focusing on the possibilities of sustainable architecture and urban design. After a family tragedy side tracked me for a couple of years, and I had quite a few more miles behind me, I founded Tangent and Hyperbole and reengaged with architecture by doing small freelance projects, sketching, consulting, and building things whenever able, getting my first built projects as I helped with sheds, decks, and retaining walls.

Eventually I went to work for Douglas Murkley, a local architect who gave me my first real education in how the industry works on a daily basis outside of college and small projects. He taught me how to be efficient with my drawings, and how to get things done on a budget. I also learned a great deal about woodworking, as I did all the shop drawings for his AWI Certified Premium Grade woodshop, that would work primarily in the Presidio of San Francisco. I have drawn cabinets that sit in starchitect homes, and I learned a lot from studying their drawings. I learned the foundations of how to get stuff built here.

After a few years, I moved on and worked at Studio.e Architecture in Eugene, that focuses on Passive/Sustainable Residential Architecture creating some of the most energy efficient and detailed homes possible. While there I worked on dozens of houses, extremely stairs, commercial buildings, and code compliance cases. I was certified as a Sustainable Homes Professional while working there, and was project managing up to five million dollars of residential construction at a time.

The profession being entirely dependent on the whims of interest rates, eventually work fell off and I needed to look elsewhere. This has lead me to reviving Tangent and Hyperbole as my full service design firm, utilizing my wide range of knowledge and experience to focus on small, sustainable, affordable projects because more than any high end vacation home, those make a real impact in people’s lives, everyday, with good design. Every project is important to someone, no matter how small.

Pictured on the left is Hansel, my now 7 year old corgi and direct supervisor. He’s got a way better sales face than me.
